Hi, my name is Philip Small. I was born in England but emigrated to Canada in early 2001. I now live with my two children, Michael and Elizabeth in SW Ontario near a small town called Langton. It is about a one hour drive to the premier speedway venue in Ontario at a place called Paris (not France I hasten to add)! |

This pic was taken back in the summer of 2001. It shows my first ever speedway bike, an "upright" Jawa 897. In the older bikes the motor was mounted vertically (upright). Later bikes are called "laydowns" as the motor is mounted almost horizontally. This dramatically lowered the center of gravity and was the single most important development in speedway bike technology in over forty years. |

I started riding speedway in 2000, one year before moving to Canada, although I have ridden dirt bikes of one form or another pretty much all my life. I was taught the basics of Speedway at the Lydd club (Kent, England) by former Reading Racers No.1 Dave Mullett. I had a few meetings at Lydd, and a training session with Olle Nygren (famous Scandinavian speedway rider of yesteryear) at Kings Lynn in England. After moving to Canada I rode in Division 3 in 2001, Division 2 in 2002 and 2003 and I competed in Division 1 in 2004 and 2005. |
